Mm news tidal wave continues with MGS posters

Dec 19th 2008 - 7:11 PM

image

This image perfectly sums up the last 24 hours of mayhem in the LBP community. EPIC.

Mm have really opened the Little Big flood gates in the last 48 hours; with two updates, 1.06 and 1.07, both packed with features, a festive construction kit, and a game changing Metal Gear Solid pack with levels, costumes, a paintgun, and new trophies announced for next week.

So just when we thought the ceaseless tidal wave of information had brought enough joyous havoc into our lives, and we were ready to have a bit of a relaxing drink or two… suddenly we noticed those merry folks at Mm returned to the internet again to throw some awesome Metal Gear Solid: Paintinator posters and box art mockups into our overfilled laps.

Click through for loads more of these…

Most of the guys and girls at Mm will surely be heading off for a well deserved Christmas break from today, meaning there can’t be any more… surely? There’s just no way our tiny minds could hold any further glee, and we might see some serious injuries up here on the Planetoid should this torrent continue.

Thank you Mm, a truly awesome couple of days for LBP, have an excellent inevitable Christmas booze-up tonight, we’ll raise a glass to you all!

How to build a better Little Big Planet, by Mm

Dec 17th 2008 - 3:26 AM

imageIf you’re one of the many people hoping for a Little Big Present from Santa this year, then maybe you’re already planning all the crazy levels you’re going to make. If however you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed and confused at the very thought, then you should head over to Game Daily, who found the time to speak to Mm founders Mark Healy and Alex Evans to gather 11 pro tips on how best to go about making a level in LittleBigPlanet.

GD: Does not having a PlayStation Eye camera severely limit what you can achieve?

MH: No, not at all. Bear in mind that you can use the existing stickers in cunning ways (just like painting with pictures!), then take a picture of your creations with the in game camera to create your own stickers. The system is massively versatile with or without a camera.

Head over to Game Daily and become enlightened!

How does it work? Tic Tac Toe

Dec 16th 2008 - 1:53 AM

Another level that baffles even the folks at Media Molecule, at least according to their most recent set of level picks, Tic TacToe…

Other great levels selected to appear on the Mm blog today include Rz22g’s incredible tank, a lander mission, and an entire working piano with an auto play function, go check them out!

How to swap material textures with material properties

Dec 13th 2008 - 3:47 PM

Planetoid has seen that an observant LBP player has posted a video on YouTube showing how to swap material properties with material textures. For example: Allowing for the creation of metal that floats, grabbable tin foil, or even sponge that acts like dark matter.

We’ve written this simple example on how to create floaty tin foil (as shown in the YouTube video):

  • Create a shape with the material that posesses the properties you want to achieve. In this case, Floaty material.
  • Using your pop-it again, lethalise the floaty material using the gas tool.
  • Use the material changer to change the material of your shape to the one with the texture you want to achieve. In this case, Tin foil.
  • Delethalise the shape to remove the gas and voila! You now have tin foil that floats.

You can do this with any two materials, to combine the properties of one with the texture of another. Pretty handy, huh!?

The ability to do this appears to be a glitch in the game, so it’s very possible that this feature may be removed in future game patches. Then again, this could just be a hidden feature. We’ll keep an eye out for whether or not this gets fixed over the coming months.

[UPDATE]
This glitch no longer works after the 1.07 patch update.

Play, Create, Share scores “returning soon”

Nov 29th 2008 - 1:46 AM

Since launch, residents of Little Big Planet will no doubt of noticed a few oddities in the game. Like, for example - why their Play, Create and Share scores remain at zero. Where are the scores for all that hard work and play!?

Play Create Share
Score FAIL

Sam_Protagonist, Senior Community Development Manager posting on the Official PlayStation EU forums, shed some light on the feature earlier this week…

It’s not exactly broken, but it is deactivated at present.

Until we’re happy with server performance we’ve switched off a few online features, Play Create Share scoring being one, in order to help the service to remain stable. The good news is that we’re not far from reaching stability, so expect this to return soon. As soon as there’s an exact date for its return I’ll let you know.

That sounds reassuring. Or not.
It’ll be good to see it up and running in the game, although whether or not it will backwardly add all your previous scores for time spent playing, creating and sharing looks pretty unlikely.

How to get your moderated LBP levels back…

Nov 27th 2008 - 1:23 PM

A PlayStation community team lead has revealed on the Official PlayStation forums how it is possible to play levels you’ve created which have been moderated.

Community Team Leader, MusterBuster states:

I have a solution for you!

Can I ask you to restart your console, and do not log in to the PlayStation Network.

Whilst offline, enter LittleBigPlanet and edit the level on My Moon - then save it on to a different slot.

Log back in, and re-publish

So there you go. Sony moderating levels and then Sony telling you how to get around it. Thank goodness there are dedicated community support staff around like MusterBuster to help out the more unfortunate of us. Top marks for Community Support MusterBuster!

If you’re still having problems with this, once your level is copied using the method above, you can save your level as an object and save to your library before placing it in a new level. If you have a very large level, you may need to save sections as objects, but both methods should work for re-publishing your content.

Naturally, we wouldn’t have to do this if levels were not being moderated in their rather heavy handed yet mysteriously uninformative way.

Working two cylinder engine

Nov 24th 2008 - 11:48 AM

Another clever Little Big Planet player has managed to build a two cylinder engine, using impact explosives, emitters and some cogs. Good work!

This is great news! It gives players the chance to build engines without relying on motor-bolts or rockets and potentially build an engine with more power than traditional methods…

Homemade Sackboys

Nov 19th 2008 - 4:39 AM

Saw this selection of homemade sackboys and sackgirls over on Wonderland today, aren’t they cute?

DIY Joker sackboy costume

Nov 2nd 2008 - 5:42 PM

Saw this over on LittleBigMadness, a video on how to make your very own Joker sackboy costume.

This was something we too were playing with during the beta, but ours was never as good as this. Are there any other DIY costumes out there? There will be soon I’m sure.

LBP at Sony London HQ

Nov 2nd 2008 - 4:56 PM

A friend of ours has smuggled us some photos taken inside the Sony London HQ. The microfilm was brought to us hidden within a jar of marmite, it is not know how many people died to bring us this information. Once developed, the photos gave us some insight into what might have happened at the Sony wrap party a few weeks ago, some sackboy designs still remain, a few showing the twisted imaginations of those who dwell within the Sony building.

Import images function coming by Christmas

Nov 2nd 2008 - 4:48 PM

image

Media Molecule posted this photo on their Flickr feed

In some really quite excellent news that will make level builders everywhere rejoice in the streets, Alex Evans has confirmed that the ability to import images into LittleBigPlanet will be implemented by Christmas. Speaking at the GameCity festival in Nottingham last week, mister Evans told the press that the feature was apparently dropped for launch due to time constraints. This makes us very excited indeed, becuse as we all know, the PS3 eye camera image capture is really quite poor for making textures, so dust off your photoshop and roll on Christmas!
