Valentines Goodies Pack is here, what’s inside?

Feb 5th 2009 - 7:59 PM

The Valentines Goodies Pack goes on sale in Europe today, £2.39 / €2.99, and like the previous Festive Goodies Pack, it includes a whole bunch of new stickers, materials and decorations to get creating with. Incidentally, the U.S PlayStation Blog yesterday said this pack was ‘free’, though we think that surely must be a mistake, so we’re expecting a $2.99 price tag when it hits the U.S store later today.

Let’s take a look at what you get for your money…

Your creativity knows no bounds - creative roundup #1

Feb 4th 2009 - 8:33 PM

A while ago we wondered if anyone had been inspired by LBP to get out the scissors and glue, and asked people to send in any creative bits and bobs they had made, boy did we open the floodgates…

Below is a selection of the things we’ve been sent, apologies if we missed out something you’ve sent in, there’s rather a lot of it, give us a gentle nudge in the comments and we’ll find any missing ones!

First of all we’d like to point you in the direction of this Flickr pool of handmade Sackboys, run by members of Ravelry an online textiles community. There are so many examples of awesome sackboy in there, there’s simply not enough room to fit them all on here, so here are two that caught my eye… check out the Flickr set to see the rest!

Next up is this super cute and super fluffy sackboy from Keren, who says “Hes a lifesize (8cm) needle felted sackboy made using wool and a special barbed, very sharp needle” Ouch!

New yorker Elizabeth shared her love of LBP with us by sending us some shots of her two home made shirts, and also window decals that adorn various parts of her house, most notably her fridge and lightswitch. We really love that angry Sackboy guarding the bottom of the fridge!

That’s all from this roundup, although I’m fairly sure more sackboys are sitting in our inbox going unnoticed. Anyone else made anything? Let us know!

Valentine’s wallpaper(s), a present with love from Media Molecule

Feb 4th 2009 - 8:02 PM

To celebrate the release of the Valentine’s mini pack on PSN this week, Mm and Sony have created this romantic wallpaper for use on your PS3. We’ve also resized it a bit to fit on a PC / Mac desktop, aren’t we kind?
The wallpaper will be released officially through the Media Molecule site tomorrow morning, but has been supplied to us and other fansites early through the Sony / Mm fansite program (thanks Sam!) - so get it whilst it’s hot!

image

Download the wallpaper in 1080p for your PS3, or for your PC / Mac in either Widescreen (1920x1200) or 4:3 (1600x1200), and also a larger version of the poster image we used above. Anyone out there got the skills to make some PS3 icons to go with it?

Update:Mm have now updated their Flickr feed with more of these lovely wallpapers, and they should be on PSN too!

Make your own papercraft Sackboy!

Feb 2nd 2009 - 1:52 PM

The community-created craftwork is storming the Planetoid like a Trans-Europe Express. Today we’re checking out a lovely papercraft Sackboy designed by Zelas on DeviantArt. He’s been on the interwebs a while now, but we thought he needed highlighting once more.

The great thing about this design is that it’s super-easy to make. Simply print out the PDF design, cut it out and glue the labelled tabs together. Et voilà! Your very own papercraft Sackboy!
We think he’s super simple, super cute, and generally super - thanks for asking. Check him out:

The perfect companion to any desk!

Once you’ve printed out the 3-sheet cutout, all you need is some scissors and glue!

Download the PDF and get creating!

Much love goes out to the creator of this lovely Sackboy papercraft pattern, Zelas - you can find him on diviantart and also on etsy.

Keep sending in all your great home-made creations! Contact us to send in your photos.

Update:Regular reader Redswipe posted in the comments to this article after completing his own version of the papercraft sackboy, check it out!

Patch schedule ‘leaked’ - online create coming soon, Arcade Pack revealed

Jan 31st 2009 - 9:25 PM

The sneaky observant 20:20 vision folks over at the Playstation Lifestyle blog noticed something special in the background of one of the photos on the Media Molecule Flickr Stream - a big whiteboard with what appears to be the cheese patch release schedule.

The text doesn't tell us *much* more than we already knew, and knowing this industry, this is about as reliable as that guy that stood you up last year, HOWEVER, and it's rare for us to warrant the use of all caps like that, the board does contain some UBER SECRETS. See there we go again.

image

Patch number Patch name Patch type ? ? ?
TBC Jarlsberg
• 2000 AD
Data Legal - -
1.09 Edam
• Priority Bug Fixes
Code n/a In test n/a
TBC Cornish Yarg
• Tutorials
• Online Create
Code 23 January
28 January
End Jan?
TBC Leerdammer
• (TCP/IP)
Code TBC TBC TBC
TBC Stinking Bishop
• Arcade Pack
TBC

If this board is to believed, Online Create is scheduled to appear along with Cornish Yarg, officially scheduled for mid-March, and some new previously unknown patches have appeared.

The new patches are named Jarlsberg, a mild cow's-milk cheese with large irregular holes, which appears to contain something related to British Sci-Fi Comic 2000AD, and Stinking Bishop, a soft washed-rind cheese, that will contain something known as the "Arcade Pack".

One interesting note is that just out of sight we can see 1.08, which is listed as a data pack rather than a code pack, a patch we know contained only costumes. The 2000AD Jarlsberg patch is also listed as a data patch hmmmmmmm.

Your guesses are as as good as ours, but many, many things spring instantly to mind as to what these patches could contain, especially for the Arcade Pack - leave your thoughts in the comments!

Many thanks to everyone who sent this in - Barnsey313, Stalking Silence, CJSgamer, and MrGrey from LittleBigLand.

[UPDATE]

Media Molecule have now removed the photo from their photo stream, adding it to their private collection. However, you can see the original photo of 'super-serious' Media Molecule Art Director Kareem Ettouney here. For camera meta-data nerds, the photo was taken on January 23rd at 18:21 with a Panasonic DMC-LX3 at a shutter speed of 10/500 at f/2.8, 400 iso, although that information is truly gratuitous.

A new LittleBigPlanet level appears every 30 seconds

Jan 30th 2009 - 2:59 PM

The LittleBigPlanet community has been creating an astounding amount of community levels since launch and the latest figures being reported from Sony, show that there are over 350,000 community levels to date. That’s a lot of levels.

On average, that’s a brand new level being submitted every 30 seconds. Tick-tock, there goes another one!

Of course, the difficulty with having so many levels is actually finding the ones you like, and with the latest features in game allowing for searching through tags, keywords, ratings, users and other parameters - that whole process is much easier now. Which is a good thing, when there are ‘over 9000’.

Via Electric Pig (we’re not sure what an Electric Pig is exactly, but we want one. It sounds like Spider Pig but even more awesome)

Designer Rex Crowle hails Tony Hart

Jan 29th 2009 - 6:57 PM

Rex Crowle, the Graphic Design guru behind much of LittleBigPlanet’s art style, has hailed TV artist Tony Hart, who sadly died last week .

We’re not worthy!

Rex wrote a lovely piece about Tony Hart on the Media Molecule blog a few weeks back, but in a new interview with South London Today, Rex talks further about Tony, his influence on LittleBigPlanet and how moving it was to finally meet Tony Hart at the launch party for the game. Rex says:

The spirit of Little Big Planet springs from Tony’s belief that anything can be used to create art.

Big pile of homemade sackboys

Jan 25th 2009 - 6:53 PM

The other day we were asking if any of you had been inspired by LittleBigPlanet to get out the scissors and glue, and start creating things. The first email we received was from Paul, who dropped us a line to tell us about his big pile of homemade sackboys… 16 of them to be precise, check them out…

image

Awesome huh? He also sent us some teaser pics of his soon to be completed custom made Solid Snake sackboy doll, with the promise of updating us when it was complete.

We want one, I bet you do to. Anyone else been creating things?

Did someone say chocolate sackcake?

Jan 25th 2009 - 3:07 PM

Yes, that is exactly what they said. Sackcake.

A Geekologie reader named Kelli made this cake for her friends birthday party:

I made the cake for my friend Marchelo’s birthday dinner last night, and everyone loved it! It was a basic lemon pudding cake with chocolate fudge frosting, all in all 2.5 cakes and 3 cans of frosting went into this creation!

She’s done a fine job at recreating Sackboys loveliness with soft spongey goodness, covered in glistening chocolate. Oh how we love you, Sackboy…

Sackcake
The create mode starts. With a pile of cake material.

Sackcake
...Skip to the end! The ‘eat’ mode starts. With the head.

Great cake construction work there. Perhaps Sony could start producing their own Sackboy cakes and sell them down at the local supermarket. Heck, in the UK you can get Super Mario cakes at Marks & Spencer, why not Sackboy?!

Be sure to check out the complete Sackboy cake photoset on Picassa.

Thanks to Twitterer Redswipe for sending this in. [Via Geekologie]

Electronic Beat Sequencer created in LittleBigPlanet

Jan 25th 2009 - 2:52 PM

Within a few weeks of LittleBigPlanet being released, the world was amazed to see a working 8-bit calculator created in the game by user Upsilandre.

Well, a similarly amazing creation has just popped up in our Big Book of Little Levels from PSN user vinizu, who has managed to create a fully working Electronic Beat Sequencer. We’re kind of gobsmacked at this, but see for yourself in this video just exactly how complicated it is…

The level allows the player to assign different sounds that are played in sequence. Sounds are assigned by placing different coloured blocks in to any one of 8 different positions in the beat sequence. Sounds so simple, eh?

Mad respect goes out to vinizu, the creator of this level. Amazing!

Media Molecule’s ‘LBP Tips Special: Survival Challenges’

Jan 22nd 2009 - 11:21 PM

Media Molecule have just released a great ‘LBP Tips Special’ video, showing exactly how to nail those survival challenges. The video ties in with the Media Molecules level picks for this week…

Be sure to check out the in-game news, as there are four great survival challenges showcased, all helpfully linked to so they’re super-easy to find and play. We played them earlier - they’re great!

You can read more about the tips video on Media Molecule’s original blog post.
