LittleBig Contra released to the community

Feb 27th 2009 - 12:57 PM

A collaborative project from a team of creators on Neo ‘how-many-years-will-it-take-to-get-my-account-approved’ GAF has now been completed and released to the community.

The project aimed at delivering the definitive experience of the 1987 arcade game, Contra (also known as Gryzor and Probotector), to LittleBigPlanet. The goal has been to recreate the 8 stages of the original NES version of the game, which the team has managed to achieve.

It’s a lot to take on and we believe this is the biggest community level building project in LittleBigPlanet to date. The eight levels and building team are as follows:

  1. Jungle: MisterAnderson - PSN: Leonidas2123
  2. Base 1: Orz- PSN: SaitoHalifax
  3. Waterfall: PSN - RyanardoDavinci
  4. Base 2: Orz- PSN: SaitoHalifax
  5. Snowfield: PSN: NinjaMicWZ
  6. Energy Zone: El_Beefo - PSN: El_Beefo
  7. Hangar: Jaeyden - PSN: Jaeyden
  8. Alien’s Lair: Donkey Show - PSN: gevurah22

Along with the release of the levels is a preview trailer. Check it out:

Impressive stuff! We’re off to play these levels right now. And with those new level search features released on Wednesday, it should be pretty easy to track these levels down wink

You can find out more about the project on the teams release thread on NeoGAF and in a great write up article over on One Last Continue.

really nice

Aren’t they the least bit worried about moderation?  I thought this kind of level creation would get removed?

Anchor

@Pumapayam

There is the risk; however, a lot of publishers and companies have asked to be whitelisted, they won’t ask for the removal of anything that takes from their products.  That is why you see a lot of mirror’s edge levels and Super Mario based levels.

I would hope the original developer and publisher of Contra would see this as a sign of respect and enjoy it.

INCREDIBLE!!  I really hope these lvls don’t get removed. Such a tremendous collaborative effort.

Can’t wait to try ‘em.

Rex Crowle’s twitter feed reads:

“we just watched and played Contra LBP levels and trailer in the Mm office while chugging beer and cheering smile

@Chris

Whitelisted, where did you hear this.  What companies/publishers agreed to this?

Anchor

It was mentioned some time back, around the launch, in the forums on littlebigplanets main site.  There was a thread about moderation and copyright infringement.

There were no exact companies listed but it was said a good majority of publishers and developers were ok with their properties being protrayed in this manner, as long as it was positive.

Sorry I can’t be more specific or have a link. I will see what I can find later today.

Anchor

i look to do something simular with donkey kong country, but creating takes too long =p

Anchor

Search box is top right wink

Try searching for whitelist - we’ve written a few bits wink

Anchor

Well, I managed to play most. Sadly, the last level didn’t appear for me…

Anchor

Well, there went my own Contra level.  I thought I was doing pretty good till I saw how impressive this was.

Anchor

James, thanks for sharing the link about my whitelist question.  This was news to me.

Thanks for the shout out… we’re all beaming with pride over the reception we’ve gotten from the LBP community, and on the net in general. lol @ the foreward description of NeoGAF. I’m not even registered there because I only have a free email account… ironic.

I tried this thing out but ran into a problem. I couldn’t beat the first level!! It’s that hard!!
