Aw - we got a Valentine!

Feb 14th 2009 - 2:07 PM

Now, normally we simply wouldn’t indulge ourselves in such shameless self-promotion, but heck - you know what, it’s Valentine’s day!

Regular Little BIG Planetoid reader, Azman007 has created a level called ‘A short tribute level to LittleBigPlanetoid‘. Totally un-prompted, might we add!

He says, rather enthusiastically:

We all love littlebigplanetoid.com so this is a short tribute made on littlebigplanet to show how much I and the nation love it. We love you littlebigplanetoid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With fourteen exclamation marks, it’s a level of enthusiasm for us which is truly heart warming. Anyway, check it out:

It really made us smile to see this. We love the 3d version of our logo, and the use of the ‘planetoid eye’ throughout is really great. Thank you Azman, we’ll keep up the hard work!

Did you get the Valentine’s goodies pack? Are you all having a nice Valentine’s day? Have you made any levels for the loved ones in your life? Let us know!

We can’t help but return some love back to you all having seen this, so we leave you with a tit-bit of Planetoid news; for something which we’ve had many, many requests for: The Little BIG Planetoid Forums are coming. And much more!

Award nominations rain down upon the LittleBigPlanet in sizeable chunks

Feb 12th 2009 - 5:15 PM

imageOver the last few days we have observed severe weather conditions down on the LittleBigPlanet, a storm of epic proportions with award nominations raining down upon the heads of all who dwell there.

BAFTA has listed LittleBigPlanet as a nominee for the best game in the Artistic Achievement, Casual, Original Score, Technical Achievement, and Use of Audio categories, plus the Game Award of 2008, which is voted for by the public - (so get voting!).

At the GDC Game Developer’s Choice awards, to be hosted by Tim Schafer once again, LBP will be up for a potential seven of the ten awards: Best Game Design, Best Visual Art, Best Technology, Best Audio, Best Debut, Innovation and the apparently coveted Game of the Year award.

If all those weren’t enough, today the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year,  the Design Museum’s annual exploration of the most innovative, interesting and forward-looking new work in design of all kinds, has shortlisted LittleBigPlanet for their Interactive Award 2009.

All of these on top of the 10 nominations at the Interactive Achievement Awards, and the host of awards won at the end of last year.

Congratulations to Media Molecule for this impressive bundle of prizes, and good luck at the ceremonies!

LittleBigPlanet 4” Toy Figures on their way, plus Plushies!

Feb 10th 2009 - 9:24 AM

Ever since launch, LittleBigPlanet fans have been shouting out, rather loudly, for official merchandise. Whilst there have been a small number of plastic figurines and knitted Sackboys from Sony, they’ve only ever been promotional items and never produced on a large commercial scale. This has meant that the community has had a whale of a time producing their own Sackboy of courses.

SCEA have announced that they’ve teamed up with Mezco Toys - creators of action figure lines which include South Park, Family Guy, Heroes and even the Notorious B.I.G.

The figures are being released across North America at selected retail outlets and online stores in Spring. So hopefully that means some importing for everyone else around the world, at least until they’re announced for sale elsewhere. Check them out:

Sackboy Figures
I want the neon one. No, wait - the one with the afro. Oh heck, gimme all of them!

If you happen to be in New York between February 15th and 18th, then you might want to pop along to the Toy Industry Association’s Toy Fair 2009 to get a sneak preview of these figures at the Mezco stand. Register now to get in!

Also revealed in the latest U.S PlayStation Blog update, official Sackboy Plushies are on the way, with more news coming up soon as they continue making them.

LBP Patch 1.09 Edam is now live

Feb 9th 2009 - 10:43 PM

Patch 1.09, aka Edam is now live, having hit the servers at around 9.41pm GMT. It is 23Mb in size.

As announced on Media Molecule’s blog earlier this evening, patch 1.09 arrives with a bang and gives us some epic bug fixes, which many community members will be very pleased to see arrive.

image
Edam. In Sainsbury’s. On Saturday afternoon. Spot the cheeky Gouda.

Here are the official patch notes from Media Molecule:

  • Failed to save profile’ message not being displayed when a users profile is full.
  • Object Capture Bug: switch connectors being deleted when an object is captured.
  • Failed to load profile issue :where the user is thrown out to the XMB due to a texture that is not registered in their profile being present in their pod.
  • Text not displaying in the text chat window.
  • Slow rewind due to moderation check.
  • Save file corruption which caused the game to crash when placing any object in an emitter in any level.

imageA big thank-you goes out from the community to the Media Molecules and the testing team, who have apparently been giving Edam their extra special attention.

Will this fix the problems that people have been having with their save data files? Well, we certainly hope so - and that’s what it says on the tin. Enjoy!

The next patch, Cornish Yarg is a feature rich patch due out in the next four weeks and is set to unleash online create mode, and tutorials.

For full details, check the official Media Molecule blog post for details on Edam.

Someone get me the oven gloves, its time to make Sackboy cupcakes!

Feb 9th 2009 - 12:28 PM

Down-with-the-kids cooking website, Video Game Cookies: and other 1337 snacks, Snack or Die has recently posted details on how to make Sackboy cupcakes. This, my friends, is great news.

For far too long now, sweet snacks like pretzels, doughnuts (slang: donut), muffins and choc-chip cookies have been soaking up the limelight as the flag bearers of sweet tasting goodness. More recently however, cupcakes have risen up like a phoenix from the ashes in the oven, to deliver their sweet loveliness to the masses.

And with their resurgence, comes the Sackboy cupcake. They truly are nothing short of brilliant:

Let me wipe that smile off your face, little Sackcake.

First one to send a box of these to Media Molecule gets chocolate on their face!

For full details on making these, head over to Snack or Die: Sackboy cupcakes

New chance for Europeans to win an LBP Crown

Feb 9th 2009 - 12:15 PM

A new LBP contest is taking place in Europe, giving players a unique chance to win one of those super-special, super-spangley LittleBigPlanet Crowns.

The February Level Design Challenge is open now and is accepting entries until 23 February. So you’ve got just two weeks!

With levels being judged by Media Molecule themselves, competition entrants can expect the very best in final decisions. Along with a LBP Crown, winners will also receive a Sackboy figurine.
The official competition announcement is as follows:

image

As part of our “I ♥ PlayStation” month of events, we’d like all you LittleBigPlanet level creators out there to take up our February level design challenge.

We’d like you to create a fun, surprising and ingenious LittleBigPlanet level that requires two players to play through and complete. So any contraptions, puzzles or devices that you include in your level must involve the co-operation of two little Sackboys (or Sackgirls!) to finish.

When you upload your 2-player LittleBigPlanet level, make sure you use the following 4-letter tag at the start of your level name so we can spot it: “LBPF” (the F’s for “February”!). Please also ensure that any levels you upload agree with the LittleBigPlanet Upload Guidelines.

At the end of the month, MediaMolecule will pick out the best level and reward its creator with an adorable Sackboy figurine and the very rare, much-coveted LBP Crown!

Upload your levels by midnight on Monday 23 February 2009 to be in with a chance of winning. Good luck!

More information, plus terms and conditions can be found on the official forum thread for this contest.

LittleBigPlanet PSN Avatars Inbound

Feb 7th 2009 - 11:57 AM

In a comment on the PlayStation Blog, SCEA Marketing Manager Mark Valledor has said that Sackboy avatars (for PSN) are ‘being worked on‘.

Here’s what PSN user Kushman666 asked:

you can also release some sackboy avatars
so i can ditch this grey face

Mark then replied:

LOL…we’re actually working on that as we speak.

So, good news all round there then.

It’s pretty unbelievable that Sackboy avatars have not been available yet. Sackboy has been the leading man of he PlayStation brand for many months now, and there are many players who’ll be very pleased to sign in to PSN with Sackboys smiling little face. It has to be said, that some of the existing PSN Avatars are, ahem, questionable:

PSN Avatar
If you saw this staring up at you in the toilet bowl, you’d probably have a heart attack.
Let’s just call him Mr Hanky.

As always, we’ll post back here with more news of PSN Sackboy avatars when it comes in.

Thanks to capt.fury for sending this in.

Happy Birthday Rick Astley - let’s get sackrolling!

Feb 6th 2009 - 9:52 PM

Why not sackroll somebody today to celebrate?

LittleBigPlanet confirmed for D.I.C.E. Summit

Feb 6th 2009 - 5:34 PM

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced that Alex Evans will speak at the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, over February 17-20.

The D.I.C.E. Summit - which stands for Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain - is the second conference in recent days to confirm the attendance of a Media Molecule head Honcho, with GDC announcing their sessions on Wednesday.

“Our take on ‘Creative Gaming’ is that it’s an incredibly broad church, and LittleBigPlanet represents our particular first take on user generated content,“ explained Evans. “The D.I.C.E. Summit gives us the opportunity to present our design philosophy to the industry in the most prestigious forum today.“

Joseph Olin, president of AIAS, added: “The incredible achievement that Alex Evans and his colleagues at Media Molecule accomplished with Little Big Planet is the perfect topic for this year’s conference.“

“The D.I.C.E. Summit line-up is the strongest yet featuring many of the speakers that are defining our industry and laying the groundwork for future generations of game creators.“

Thanks very much GI.biz.
