Edge’s 10/10 review now online

Oct 23rd 2008 - 9:41 AM

Edge have posted their print review of LittleBigPlanet to the internets, along with the full marks score of 10/10.

Just weeks after a limited preview release, this game has exploded, surely, beyond both its projections and its initial code. Even, actually, beyond the conventions of the average review. It’s a multiplayer riot, a visual landmark, a feat of engineering, and one of the most charming games ever made. But even those accolades are dwarfed by its scope, its potential, and the apparent endlessness of them both. What’s more, it sees the pariah of this generation, Sony, publishing at the height of its powers. Not since the early days of PlayStation has that troubled brand stood for – and fostered – such a daring, transcendent, magnificent piece of work.

Another notoriously hard scoring publication showering LBP in buckets of praise, another victory for Media Molecule!

Phil Harrison speaks about LBP recall

Oct 23rd 2008 - 12:03 AM

imagePhil Harrison, ex President of Sony Worldwide Studios, and current President of Atari, has said that Sony “took absolutely the right decision” to recall LBP.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz on the eve of his keynote at Unite ‘08 in Copenhagen, Harrison was asked about the title that he championed all the way through development, before his departure earlier this year.

“I wasn’t privy to all of the discussions and debate that went on within Sony, but I know they would have thought very deeply about it, and at the highest level of the company,” he explained. “And on reflection I think it was absolutely the right thing to do, because LittleBigPlanet set out from day one to be a game for the entire world - and if there was anything that accidentally detracted from that vision and made the game not fun for the entire world, then the game would have fundamentally failed in its mission.

“So I think Sony took absolutely the right decision - painful though it was, and frustrating though it might be for gamers who were looking forward to it. It only seems to have heightened the anticipation, so I think it’ll end up being a win, and full credit to Media Molecule for turning around a fix as quickly as they did.”

1.01 patch in the wild

Oct 22nd 2008 - 11:52 PM

The 1.01 patch hit the servers this morning, presumably in a reaction to the street date breakers, and the stores that neglected to pay attention to the recall notification. The patch almost certainly removes the offending music that has caused so much trouble, but has possibly also brought other changes - We swear that yesterday you still had to shake the controller to remove jetpacks, but now a quick press of the Circle button removes them, whilst veterans are left shaking the Dualshock around as onlookers stare in confusion.

What else is changed, if anything, is unknown at this time.

Famitsu scores LBP 38/40

Oct 22nd 2008 - 11:48 PM

The notoriously hard judging Japanese publication Famitsu has given LittleBigPlanet a score of 38/40. The score is broken down as 10,10,9,9, where four reviewers score the game simultaneously, and two of them giveing the game perfect marks.

Musician says quoting from Qur’an is quite normal

Oct 21st 2008 - 1:47 PM

Speaking to the BBC’s News at Ten program last night, Toumani Diabate, the musician behind the song responsible for LittleBigPlanet’s delayed release, has said that it is common practice to use the Qur’an as an inspiration in music.

“It’s quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed,” Diabate explained. “It’s my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam”

However, Shaykh Ibrahim Mograa, a representative of the Muslim Council of Britain, disagreed.

“Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the actual word of god and give it utmost respect,” he said. “Therefore if it were to be used with the accompaniment of music or if it were to be used in a game or a commercial - that would upset and cause offence and hurt to many, many Muslims.”

LittleBigPlanet in Covent Garden

Oct 21st 2008 - 12:09 PM

On Friday we took a trip to Covent Garden in London to visit the LittleBigPlanet space that's been set up there.

A short walk from the tube station and you're there, a shop space covered in Sackboys and bright colours. Inside the space you can play LBP, shove freebies into your pockets and take part in some of the create workshops whilst listening to a DJ play music from a nicely decorated booth. You need to book in-store to take part in the workshops, which range form screen printing to knitting, but if you drop in to book, or just want to take a look, you'll still be able to create your own Sackboy design using a printed template and the massive pile of pens, glue, stickers, felt, etc. All the visitor created Sackboys and Sackgirls are then pinned up on the wall, completing the Play, Create, Share circle.

Little Big Planet in Covent Garden:
When? 10th October - 15th November. 11:30 – 7pm Tuesday- Saturdays and 12pm-6pm Sundays
Workshops will be held Wednesday evenings, but please check in store to book.
Sundays will have chillout sessions /family days

Unit1, Thomas Neal's Centre,
Covent GArden, London, WC2

Breaker! Breaker! Some stores unaware of recall!

Oct 21st 2008 - 11:37 AM

This just in, Some American stores such as Walmart and Target are have apparently honoured LittleBigPlanet’s original release date, and are blissfully unaware of the product recall.

This lucky guy picked up a copy form his local Walmart at Midnight last night.

Now, having worked in retail, I knew that there was very little chance the game would be able to be recalled from ALL the stores it had been sent to, and so I began my hunt. What did I find? You may be surprised. It seems that two huge retailers seem to have missed the boat on the recall, namely Wal-Mart and Target. That’s right, I just picked up my copy of LittleBigPlanet at midnight here in my hometown. A quick phone call to all the surrounding cities’ superstores brought similar responses. It’s for sale, and that’s the truth.

Muslim group speaks out against LBP Recall

Oct 21st 2008 - 12:24 AM

M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D, president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy has today spoken to Edge and major news publications such as CNN, as the LBP recall became headline news. In his statement to Edge, Mr Jasser says that offended Muslims should think twice before condemning LittleBigPlanet.

“Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted.”

The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive.”

“We personally do not endorse the mixing of Koranic verses felt by Muslims to be the words of God with non-educational videogames. “

“The fact that the music writer is a devout Muslim should highlight that at the core of this issue is not about offending ‘all Muslims,’ but only about freedom of expression and the free market.”

LBP Name dropped on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross

Oct 20th 2008 - 6:12 PM

LittleBigPlanet was named dropped last week in UK Chat show Friday Night With Jonothan Ross. Whilst no footage of the game was shown, Jonathan Ross did produce knitted Sackboys that were sent in to them, presumably by the Media Molecule / Sony hype machine. The dolls were designed to look like the host himself, who as he introduced them proclaimed ‘knitting is the new rock and roll,’ and also Ricky Gervais, who was a guest on the show that week, who asked if it had a tiny penis like his.

You can still watch the episode on the BBC iPlayer, the section on LBP is about 24 minutes into the show, which also features Chef Gordon Ramsey and Comedian Sarah Silverman.
